Increasingly, companies are shifting their focus from the selling products to providing services. As a result, when designing new products, engineers must consider the products complete life cycle, in addition to the design requirements. To identify likely areas of concern, engineers must consult maintenance or performance information from either the original or similar products. However, in a large engineering company, the amount of information accumulated is likely to be large and in a variety of different formats – leading to complex knowledge management issues. This seminar discusses the work being undertaken on the DTI funded IPAS and HIPARSYS projects and their approach to provide the future designer with the tools to support this paradigm shift. As part of the work we are currently developing the knowledge desktop to support the engineer; the current version will be demonstrated during the presentation.
