Abstract

In the research and teaching silos of academia we see tremendous expertise in the bits and pieces of technology that constitute next generation electronics and computing. But the real challenges are not in the parts but in their combination – how to design and build systems, at all physical scales from system-on-chip to the Grid. The new cross-discipline ECS Pervasive Systems Centre (PSC) is tackling this agenda through building real applications “in the wild” which inform basic research, and through a symbiosis of theory and practice. This seminar will explain the motivation and philosophy of PSC and how you can get involved. On the way we will see some example projects from sensor networks to digital health, and if I have time I’ll question whether our undergraduate teaching is really equipping students for the future we describe.
